Why are people suprised blacks arent playing baeball?
I'm guessing that I'm a little older than you, Anthony, but the decline in black interest in baseball has been going on for about 3 decades now. First, basketball began drawing the interest of black kids away from baseball; then, football. There are a lot less vacant lots for ALL kids to play on; I'm white, grew up in a middle cl town, and on the weekends you would walk around town with your' bat and glove and take place in one of the 3, sometimes more-games that were being played in various places around town. That couldn't happen today because there are no more vacant lots left in that town, and kids just no longer do that anyway. Urban areas went all to hell in the late '60s, and the structures located in the cities that used to enable minority kids to engage in and play baseball disintegrated; you need decently kept fields, equipment, and lots of organization(and dedicated adult supervision) for kids to have the proper structure to learn to play baseball; in basketball, just a court,a ball, and a group of guys gets it done. Guess which sport wins out in the urban areas? The pendulum always swings back to some extent though, and I think that in time, you'll see the efforts which are being made today to draw the interest of black kids back into baseball, coupled with changes in society, should result in more black youth playing baseball than now-but you'll never see the same level as participation that you once did. Football and basketball will still have their appeal.
