Ipod touch not recognized in tunes or on computer?

I just bought a refurbished ipod touch 16gb for my husband for christmas. It was working just fine until yesterday when I uploaded the iphone update for it. I was prompted to restore the ipod but midway through restore, it stopped and I got an error message saying it could not restore. Now I get the screen with the usb and itunes symbol on the ipod and when I plug it into my computer it is not recognized. I've tried resetting it, I've deleted itunes and downloaded and intalled it again and nothing seems to work. Someone PLEASE help me!
